hrafnagaldur_iii.jpg A part of Odins Raven Magic will be premiered in London’s Barbican Centre on April 21st. Odins Raven Magic will be performed in full length at Reykjavik Arts Festival on May 24.

Trailblazers of Reykjavik’s hugely-feted interdisciplinary underground scene, Sigur Ros have earned international acclaim for their glacially beautiful, high-textured soundscapes, filled with buzzing e-bows, mordant organs, bowed guitars and beamed-in alien vocals. Here they team up with Icelandic composer Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson (winner of the Felix Prize for his soundtrack to Children of Nature) to present a new project based on a “lost” chapter from the Edda, the bible of Norse mythology. One hundred and fifty years ago Odin’s Raven Magic was removed from the manuscript as “a fake”, but is this year being restored to the text after the scholars adjudged it authentic. The performance features arrangements for orchestra and choir, along with vocal work from traditional Icelandic chanter Steindor Andersen.

Here they embark on their most ambitious work so far: restoring Odin’s Raven Magic, a forgotten masterpiece of ancient Icelandic poetry, to its rightful place of honour. Here, Iceland’s ancient song tradition merges with the most exciting new horizons in modern Icelandic music. New light is shed on the past, ancient motifs are revitalized in our modern age. Also engaged in the performance are a string section, a choir and a huge harp hewn from Icelandic rock by sculptor Páll from Húsafell. Choir conductor: Árni Hardarson. This work has been eagerly awaited ever since word first got around that it was being specially produced for Reykjavík Arts Festival.

Odin’s Raven Magic is an Icelandic poem in the ancient Edda tradition, thought to have been composed in the 14th or 15th century. Its anonymous author clearly had an intimate knowledge of the Edda literature and mythology and alludes to a number of pagan motifs which are now lost. The poem recounts a great banquet held by the gods in Valhalla. While they are absorbed in their feasting, ominous signs appear that could foretell the end of the worlds of the gods and men. Odin’s Raven Magic had been relegated from mainstream ancient literature ever since 1867, when Norwegian scholar Sophus Bugge claimed it was a 17th century fabrication. This theory has since been toppled with literary and linguistic arguments, and Jónas Kristjánsson, probably the most renowned scholar of ancient Icelandic literature today, has even hailed it as “a new Edda poem”.

Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson has composed music for the theatre and more than twenty films. He won the European Film Academy’s Felix award in 1991 for his score for Fridrik Thór Fridriksson’s Oscar-nominated film Children of Nature. Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson has worked with numerous musicians in Iceland and abroad, and is currently engaged on the music for a production of Nobel laureate Halldór Laxness’ play Strompleikurinn which will open at the National Theatre in Reykjavík in April.

Sigur Rós have taken the progressive music world by storm, earning rave reviews and strings of awards for their unique, celestial music, most recently the coveted Virgin Megastore Shortlist Prize in Los Angeles. Three Sigur Rós’s songs, were on the soundtrack of Cameron Crowe’s latest film, Vanilla Sky starring Tom Cruise. Sigur Rós are now working on a new album that is eagerly awaited by their admirers around the world.

Steindór Andersen is chairman of Idunn, a society devoted to traditional Icelandic song and ballads. He has recently been making recordings of traditional ballads using state-of-the-art disc technology for the first time. Steindór Andersen made a sensational debut in modern music when he joined Sigur Rós on their tour of Europe and the USA last year.
